Hello Sushi!

I had sushi for the first time at school this year, and it was really good! My friend and I decided to maximize the number of rolls we ate, so we shared the following: spicy tuna, eel avocado, a crunch roll (which had eel and salmon roe), and an egg roll. We both agreed that the crunch roll was the best. The egg roll was surprisingly sweet (though I would not go as far to call it dessert) and delicious too. Overall, a very satisfying meal despite the long wait for our food.

Brunch with my Roomie

Today, my roommate and I went for brunch at the Lord Jeffrey Inn. I had a wonderful time – great company and delicious food, what more could I ask for?

Nevertheless, leading up to this wonderful experience, I was faced with a dilemma: order something sweet or savory for brunch. I definitely like sweet brunch (i.e. pancakes, french toast, etc) rather than savory brunch (i.e. eggs, quiche, etc).  However, I find that when I order pancakes, I always want something salty a couple of hours later.

So I was determined to order eggs, and this went out the door when I saw ricotta pancakes with maple pecan butter on the menu. I was so glad with my choice. The pancakes were light, fluffy, and a beautiful golden-brown color. My roommate ordered a frittata (it kind of rhymes with ricotta!) that had pork shoulder, chorizo, potato, cheddar, and came with a side salad. It looked really good too.

I am very full and satisfied at the moment, but I am sure in a few hours give or take, I will be popping my head in my fridge looking for something savory to eat.

Excursion to Atkins

Today was such a beautiful day, so my friend and I made a trip to Atkins. Everything in the store looks so wonderful.

They had all these Easter baskets, which made me wish that I celebrated Easter.

Their doughnuts are absolutely superb – especially their cider doughnuts.

You can tell a store is awesome when they have an entire aisle dedicated to maple syrup.

Chocolate and marzipan. My mouth was watering by this point.

Banana bread, zucchini bread, and cakes. My friend and I bought an apple cinnamon cake that I haven’t tried yet, but it looks absolutely delicious. (it’s the one on the bottom right).

This is the apple harvest shake that I had. It tastes like a liquified version of apple crisp. It is made with Atkins’ homemade apple cider and soft serve vanilla ice cream. I wish it looked as good as it tastes.

And finally, the cake my friend and I bought. (Probably not the best idea as it’s Passover, but I am going to let this one slide!)

Maple Drops

After two midterms today, these maple drops from Atkins were a nice reward. The drops taste like a solidified version of maple syrup. Though very tasty, I would definitely not recommend putting these candies on your breakfast pancakes!

Focaccia Reigns Supreme

I was thrilled to see they were serving focaccia in the cafeteria tonight. It was pretty good, but I was missing the tomatoes that the one in the picture above has.

As I think about focaccia, I realize it is a combination of two awesome foods: bread and pizza. I love pretty much everything about focaccia: the rosemary and basil, the tomatoes, and the thick soft crust. (Strangely enough, I don’t like the thick crust of a deep-dish pizza).

While I can only eat two slices of pizza, I can definitely finish this entire focaccia “pie.” Oh carbs, I love you, but you will definitely be my demise.

Shabu-Shabu and Bibimbap

Although bibimbap is Korean and shabu-shabu is Japanese, I love eating both of them in the same meal. The bibimbap below (which has rice, mushrooms, soy bean sprouts, tofu, and other delicious ingredients I cannot figure out) was prepared in a hot sizzling stone pot.

I always order the beef and vegetable shabu-shabu and cook the meat and veggies in a pot of boiling water. (Don’t worry, the food in the last two pictures is for three). I love how eating becomes an interactive experience.

My Current Diet: Caffeine and Pastry

This is what college is doing to me at the moment. Pastries and coffee are keeping me going. Just one more week, and then I can breathe again!

Fine French Food

My blog is definitely becoming a source of procrastination. As I sit in my dorm room, I fondly remember my lunch at a French restaurant last week. My meal included delicious French baguette (yes, I ate every bread in the basket below), broccoli soup, trout with veggies, and crepe suzette ( a crepe filled with sugar, orange juice, and Grand Marnier). Perfection!

Back to Reality

Though glad to see all of my college friends, I was a little upset to start classes again. My three midterms next week are looming over my head.

To comfort myself, I am eating the biscotti I made on Saturday. (I am also sharing them with friends. I can’t eat all 28 of them by myself).

On a happier note, I didn’t get a chance to post my delightful Saturday lunch with my friend at Alice’s Teacup. I love this place, and you can tell that it is popular because there always seems to be a wait. (So worth it though!)

I ordered a pumpkin scone, and my friend ordered a white chocolate raspberry scone. These scones were absolutely delicious, and they were served with raspberry jam and clotted cream. To cut the sweetness of the scones, we also both ordered savory crepes which came with a side salad. My crepe had ham, gruyere, asparagus, spinach, and tomato inside.

Though I am definitely not in a wonderland at the moment, I am grateful for the wonderful week I spent at home and the great education I am receiving.

Homemade Biscotti

Today marks my last day in the kitchen. I went out with a full blast making chocolate-dipped biscotti with dried cranberries and walnuts. Click here for the recipe I followed. Instead of pistachios, I used walnuts because of a slight mishap. (I bought salted pistachios, which would definitely not taste good in my biscotti. To solve my mistake, I decided to replace the pistachios with the walnuts I had in my pantry). Also, because I am a chocolate lover, I dipped these biscotti in melted chocolate. Happy eating everyone!
